LA Burgers and Daiquiris

It takes about five hours to drive from the University of Houston to New Orleans, but no more than 10 minutes to get to LA Burgers & Daiquiris. At this Louisiana-inspired spot, order a Creole-based hamburger on a French bun, and—if you’re legit—a Bayou Mama daiquiri to wash it all down. In the mood for something sweet? The menu includes more than just burgers. Try the Pecan Pralines & Cream milkshake or double-scoop ice cream.

Pink Pizza

If you’re looking for a place to watch a Cougars game that isn’t your typical sports bar, head to Pinks Pizza, which serves some of the best and biggest slices around campus, and has several TV screens to boot the heart of the team. At Pinks, you can order your pizza in batches, to better accommodate your friends’ (or maybe your own) controversial pizza toppings. Enjoy goat cheese and green pepper while others stick to the basic pepperoni.

Whether you’re an out-of-state visitor or a student who moved here from somewhere else, you can’t leave without trying some—bonus points if it’s from a food truck. The very affordable Za-k-los-tacos are perfect for local college students on a budget. You can order their Burrito Texano with a spoonful of fresh gravy on top, or try the mini tacos for a small snack.
