The Biden-Harris administration presented the President’s budget for fiscal year 2023 to Congress today President Biden’s budget details his vision for expanding the progress our country has made over the past year and expanding the agenda he outlined in his State of the Union address. -To build a better America, reduce the deficit, lower costs for families, and grow the economy from the bottom up and out the middle.
“President Biden’s fiscal year 2023 budget builds on previous administrations’ historic investments in the arts and recognizes the National Endowment for the Arts’ important role in supporting the American community,” said NEA Chair Maria Rosario Jackson, Ph.D. “With continued need across sectors, the $203.55 million request will help NEA continue its role in rebuilding the national and local economies of the creative sector and further its mission of creating artistic living opportunities for all Americans. their full potential. The budget makes critical investments that will help lay a strong foundation for shared growth and prosperity for future generations. The FY 2023 budget follows investments made in FY22, including the American Rescue Plan that provided $135 million in funding to help restore, rebuild, and restart the arts and culture sector. The FY 2023 budget will provide for work in four areas that are important priorities for our nation and consistent with NEA’s new strategic plan:
- Rebuilding the creative economy
- Heal the nation
- Advancing Racial Equity, Access, and Climate Justice
- Serve the industrial sector and enhance the agency’s operations as a national asset
The budget includes funding for grant programs such as the Grants for the Arts Project, Challenge America, and Our Town, and national initiatives such as Creative Forces®: NEA Military Healing Arts Network, Poetry Out Loud, NEA Big Read, Citizens Institute on Rural Design, in American Communities Shakespeare, the Mayor’s Institute for City Design and the Musical Theater Songwriting Challenge. It will fund NEA’s equity-focused outreach to underserved populations through initiatives including work with historically black colleges and universities, support for Native arts and culture, as well as efforts focused on making the arts accessible to people with disabilities, older adults. , veterans, and institutionalized individuals. The NEA is the only funder, public or private, that annually provides equal access to the arts in all 50 states and each congressional district, the District of Columbia, and US territories.
NEA awards project-based grants through a competitive process to thousands of nonprofit organizations each year. The agency has extensive partnerships and special initiatives, research, and other efforts that contribute to the vitality and health of our neighborhoods and communities, engage our students and schools, and preserve and advance our American culture.
