About a decade ago, the local River Raisin Repertory Co. staged the popular comedy “Spamalot.”

This year, “Spamalot” is back and even includes some original cast members It opens Oct. 28-29 at 7:30 p.m. and 2 a.m. Oct. 30 at the River Raisin Center for the Arts, 114 S. Monroe St.

“We always get requests to bring the show back, and some of the former cast members requested it,” said director Tracy Glover. “We were looking for something that was light and fun.”

A few cast members are returning from 2013, including a couple of ensemble members and Rob Folkrod, who plays King Arthur, and Jeff King, who plays Lancelot.

“Rob and Jeff have great comedic timing and they really add to the show,” Glover said. “All the leads have a great flair for comedic timing. We have a great cast in place. Most of that cast is new. They’re hilarious, and it’s hard not to be amused.”

“Spamlot” is said to be a “loving rip-off” from the classic comedy “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” The musical tells the story of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, complete with showgirls, cows and murderous rabbits. In 2013, the Monroe was one of the first regional theaters to perform the 2005 show.

“The show is just silly, goofy fun,” Glover said. “It’s definitely PG, as there are plenty of adult bits and jokes. I would not recommend bringing under 16s.”

“Spamalot” features 22 contemporary songs that will be performed by an orchestra led by music director Josh Glover.

“The score is really great, and the orchestra brings it to life,” Glover said. “The show’s best-known song is probably ‘Always Look on the Bright Side of Life’.”

Glover is choreographing “Spamalot” based on Alyssa Langmeyer’s 2013 choreography.

“I’m resetting it to work with our current cast,” he said.

The original show’s costumes and set pieces are also being refreshed for 2022.

“I’m really excited to bring the show back to audiences,” Glover said. “I hope to see everyone for a great evening.”

The show is sponsored by Rudy Gonzalez.
