Moments from yesterday’s downtown: Yenke Peddler antiques | Catch My Job

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Window shopping has always been a popular pastime, especially during the holiday season. This iconic experience offers a source of wonder.

In Cincinnati, the Gidding Jenny building displayed a stern presence from the outside. But entering the booth of this store, I was lured by the fragrant scent of the famous odalisque fragrance, which promised a great shopping experience. Elegance characterized this top-class women’s garment!

Originally built in 1907 as JM Gidding & Co., the store’s terracotta exterior tiles were made by Rookwood Pottery. Built in the Luca della Robbia style, it was designed by John D. Wareham, who later served as president.

By 1939, the Jenny Co. had moved to the Gidding neighborhood from the original Union Central Building. The famous store known for their “Milbron clothing” was also noteworthy.

In 1962 a joint effort was made to join the Gidding and Jenny stores. They were very successful until the company closed in 1995.

This building still towers over the city today. Norm Wasserman, who owns it, restored the facade.

Rookwood Pottery in Cincinnati is still open today, offering classes and tours. The Holiday Shop Open House will be held on November 19 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on November 20. Demonstrations, tours and workshops are available.

Your great matte ceramic has slipped onto the original base. A nice, simple design, perhaps considered a “second” or learning tool for a talented potter. It probably dates from the 1920s and appears to have a Weller composition. Its value is about $35.
