Voters in many smaller towns and rural areas in southwestern Ontario picked up the phone or logged on to their computers to cast their ballots for new councils, with in-person voting largely abolished during these municipal elections.
The results arrived quickly, and in some areas new faces were welcomed into the council. Here’s a look at the elected mayors in areas outside London. The page will be updated as the votes are counted.
Woodstock

The town of Woodstock has a new mayor. According to early projections, Jerry Accione narrowly beat runner-up David Hilderley.
Acchione was a two-term deputy mayor and alderman who was first elected in 2014. He is a fleet manager at a local GM dealership.
Current mayor Trevor Birch, who ran to keep his job at the same time, faces allegations of sexual assault. Birch was first charged in February with assault and two counts of sexually assaulting the same woman. He was conspicuously absent from most public events during the campaign.
Saint Thomas

Mayor Joe Preston held on well to his position in the city of St. Thomas, which he first won in 2018. The longtime politician, who was once the Conservative MP for the riding of Elgin-Middlesex-London, was challenged for the second time in this campaign by Heather Jackson.
Thames Centre

A new face will join the Thames Center council table after voters elected Sharon McMillan, a real estate agent from Dorchester, Ont.
The race was tight, with incumbent Vice Mayor Kelly Elliott a close second by several hundred votes, according to unofficial results as of Monday.
Strathroy-Caradoc

Voters in Strathroy-Caradock wanted change and got it on Monday by electing a new leader and a politician who has moved the city forward for the first time. Colin Grantham won easily, with unofficial counts showing a 2,000-vote lead over incumbent Mayor Joan Vanderheyden.
She will step down after nearly 12 years representing Strathroy-Caradoc.
Lucan Biddulph

Cathi Burghardt-Jesson is returning to the council as mayor of the fast-growing area north of London. Unofficial results from Monday showed her winning by 150 votes.
Burghardt-Jesson has been in local politics for over a decade.
Middlesex Center
Mayor Aina DeViet received recognition in this election after her first victory in 2018.
