TAMPA — On Friday, Nov. 18, the STRAZ Center will celebrate Haiti’s culture, history and contributions in the latest installment of the Arts Legacy Remix program, titled “Celebration Aysien (Haitian Celebration) – A Day to Remember.” At the moment, Haiti is experiencing political and social unrest as gang presence and violence plague the country, limiting access to humanitarian aid.
NPR reports that at least half of the country’s citizens are currently facing extreme hunger, and to complicate matters further, the country is experiencing a cholera outbreak. In short, Haitians are facing a multi-layered crisis.
One reason the STRAZ Center wanted to dedicate this month’s remix presentation to Haiti is to shine a light on the current tragedies the country is facing, said community engagement manager Emma Trapp.
“We have staff members at Stratage and our Arts Legacy Dream Team who are part of the (Haitian) community and have been able to add a really authentic and emotional element to this Arts Legacy.
Haiti’s history and culture are beautiful and worth celebrating despite the country’s hardships, which is why the Arts Legacy team looks forward to celebrating all things Haitian.
“Attendees can expect performances that include music, stand-up comedy, and spoken word,” says Trapp. “There will also be a large visual art display under the grand canopy from local artists and pieces originally from Haiti.”
Additionally, attendees can expect “a signature drink inspired by Haitian cuisine” and get some laughs thanks to a performance by a local comedian.
Art and performance have long been a way to illuminate a country’s people and culture. These mediums are one of the most effective ways to illuminate humanitarian and political issues facing people. The celebration brings information and an opportunity for healing, but Trapp said the event will not take away from the burden of Haiti’s turmoil.
“At Struggle we extend our support to those who have family and friends who are currently suffering. They will be in our thoughts as we celebrate Haiti’s vibrant and wonderful culture.”
The event begins at 7:30 pm Performances include:
- Music by Straz Center artist-in-residence, Fred Johnson
- Vocal Performance – Elizabeth Dallard, Rebecca Moyes, Edgar Beussor
- Dance performance by Erica Louis and Dance Team
- Percussion solo by Ralph Isaacs
- Spoken word by Sello
- Comedy pieces as well
- Visual art by Haitian artist Junior Polo
The Arts Legacy Remix Series will continue into 2023. Performances of interest include:
- Friday, January 13 – Let Freedom Ring (MLK Jr. Commemoration) – Straz Center remembers and honors the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with an evening of gospel music, celebrating and expanding our commitment to express the powerful words of Dr. King’s writing and young voices sharing their hope. Vision for 2023.
- Friday, February 17 – International women’s celebration – This celebration will focus on women across generations whose unique experiences will come alive through a variety of artistic mediums. Women from different cultures and their unique journeys towards equality through dance, music and visual arts will be admired.
- Monday, June 19 – 3rd Annual Juneteenth Commemoration (at the Zaib Theater) – In an evening of remembrance and celebration, it will recognize the importance of June 19, 1865, when African Americans were freed from slavery in Galveston, Texas, the act that officially ended slavery in America. Features will include spoken word memorabilia, writings of historical importance, and an original performance.
