DURHAM – Duke sophomore defensive back Brandon Johnson was named Duke’s PNC Achievers Student/Athlete of the Week after recording a career-high nine tackles in the Blue Devils’ 45-21 win over the Miami Hurricanes.
Additionally, Johnson added 2.0 sacks, 2.0 tackles for loss, one fumble recovery and one interception for a touchdown. The Newton, N.C., native recovered a fumble in the second quarter, which Duke turned into seven points three plays later to extend the lead to 17-7. In the final five minutes of the game, Johnson also intercepted quarterback Jake Garcia and returned it 28 yards for a touchdown.
The defensive back tied two of Duke’s season-best six sacks against a Miami offense that entered the game tied for fourth in the ACC, allowing just a season-high 12 in six games. Johnson was also named the Walter Camp FBS National Player of the Week, becoming the first Duke player to receive the honor since 2015.Jeremy Cash).
The Blue Devils have an open week before traveling to Chestnut Hill, Mass., for a Friday night date with Boston College on Nov. 4. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Alumni Stadium and will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
PNC Achievers is a student recognition platform active in nearly 20 schools and universities across PNC Bank’s service area. Recipients are selected locally by designated panels at each school, using a set of criteria that includes athletic achievement, academic achievement, community service and student leadership.
