Here’s your chance to spend a day antique shopping/browsing in three Douglas County communities.
Four antique shows return to Arcola, Arthur and Tuscola on November 11-12.
Jill Mattingly, co-owner of one of them, the Country Spirit Antique Show, said these events draw buyers from all over the country.
The Country Spirit show will take place at three Arcola locations:
- Arcola Center, 107 W. Main St., Nov. 11 from 1 to 5 p.m. and Nov. 12 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Arcola Masonic Lodge 366, 123 S. Locust St., Nov. 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Nov. 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Best Western Plus Green Mill Village Hotel & Suites Conference Center at Interstate 57 Exit 203 on November 11th from 5pm to 9pm and November 12th from 8am to 3pm.
Arcola locations will also have refreshments, the Belle Vie coffee truck and the Highway Heartburn food truck, Mattingly said.
She and her husband started the Country Spirit Antique Show in 2011 with a single building and now hosts 50 dealers from 17 states in three buildings, she said.
The focus is on early country and primitive American antiques in their original condition—for example, an early painted cabinet from the 1800s with its original finish.
“Our customers are collectors who live with these things in their homes,” he said.
If you like that in your home, Mattingly said, “booth to booth, building to building, show to show.”

- Tuscola: Rural Life Antique Show, Nov. 11-12, 8 a.m.-4 p.m., at the Tuscola Community Building, 122 W. North Central Ave., and Main Street Center, 601 S. Main St.
- Arthur: Homesteaders Antique & Folk Art Show at the Arthur Sale Barn, 1204 Vine St., Nov. 11 from 2 to 6 p.m. and Nov. 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Arthur: Gathering on the Prairie at the Otto Center, 2058 County Road 1800 East, Nov. 12 only from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Friendly competition
Visit Champaign County’s Chambana Proud store is selling two new T-shirts and the subject of a friendly competition between Champaign Mayor Deb Feinen and City Mayor Diane Marlin.
One jersey is ‘Team Champaign-Urbana’ and the other is ‘Team Urbana-Champaign’.
The order of the names in the two cities, Champaign-Urbana or Urbana-Champaign, is a question the visitors bureau gets about once a week, said Terri Reifsteck, vice president of marketing and community engagement.
“There seems to be a divide depending on who you ask, so we thought a T-shirt could serve as an informal poll of community opinion,” he said.
Based on T-shirt sales through the end of the year, either Marlin or Feinen will receive a trophy.
The shirts were designed by local artist Ralph Roether, and a portion of the sales benefit the Champaign County Historical Museum.
T-shirts can be purchased at the Chambana Proud store at 17 E. Taylor St., C., open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or can be ordered online at chambanaproud.com.
See new careers
Parkland College is open on Fridays from noon to 2 p.m October 28for health professional programs.
The event will be held in the atrium of Parkland’s Student Union and main campus Building L, 2400 W. Bradley Ave., C, and Parkland’s Building H, 1309 N. Mattis Ave., C.
Dental hygiene, nursing, practical nursing, radiology, respiratory technology, surgery and veterinary technology programs will be provided in the L wing, and emergency health care, firefighting, massage therapy, medical assistant, nursing assistant and occupational services will be provided in the H building. therapy.

Home sales rose
Home sales in Champaign County rose for the first time in seven months in September, according to the county Association of Realtors.
There were 288 home sales in September, which is almost 4 percent more than in September 2021. That was the highest number of September home sales since 2005, when 309 homes sold that month, the Realtors group said.
Compared to the previous year, sales decreased by 7.6 percent.
More information from the Realtors group about the September sales:
- The average number of days spent on the market was 27, five days more than in September 2021.
- The median home sales price rose 2.08 percent to $181,625 from the same month last year.
- The median home price was $227,008, up 9.2 percent from September 2021.
- The average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage was 6.11 percent in September, down from 5.2 percent in August and 2.90 in September 2021. In the week ending October 13, the average fixed-rate, 30-year mortgage was 6.92. percentage.

Home heating bills are heading in the opposite direction as temperatures drop, and the Citizens Utility Board continues to warn that it’s going to be a costly winter.
Ameren Illinois’ natural gas supply rate in October was 89.08 cents per therm, 33 percent higher than in October 2021.
This is not even the highest natural gas price among utility companies. In four out of nine natural gas providers, compared in CUB, the price in October exceeded the dollar, while the price of Nicor Gas at $1.24 per barrel is 97 percent higher than last October.
