Days after issuing an advisory asking Indian nationals currently in Ukraine to leave as soon as possible, the Indian Embassy in Kyiv has shared information on the five options available for Indian nationals to cross the border.

As the war continues to escalate across Ukraine, the Indian embassy in Kyiv issued an alert on Wednesday, warning against traveling to the war zone and also advising Indian citizens currently in Ukraine to leave as soon as possible.

Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi shared with the Embassy in Kyiv the options available for Indian nationals to cross the border based on available information. The information referred to leaving Ukraine by crossing the borders of Ukraine-Hungary, Ukraine-Slovakia, Ukraine-Moldova, Ukraine-Poland and Ukraine-Romania.

The embassy has asked Indian citizens crossing the borders to continue to take precautions while traveling. For the Ukrainian-Hungarian border, the Embassy announced that the checkpoints are located in the Zakarpattia region (Tisa – for vehicles only, Dzvinkove, Luzhanka, Vilok, Chop). A convenient option is to travel to the town of Chop by train, it added.

To cross the border, the mission says, Indian nationals should have a valid passport, a valid Ukrainian residence permit (Posvidka), student card/student certificate (if applicable) and preferably a plane ticket.

For the Ukrainian-Slovakian border, checkpoints are located in Zakarpattia Oblast (Uzhgorod – for vehicles only, Mali Bereznyi, Mali Selmencioni for pedestrians). Unless they already hold a valid Schengen/Slovakia visa, Indian nationals must obtain a visa at the border crossing, it added.

In order to obtain a visa and cross the border, it said, Indian citizens should have a valid passport, a valid Ukrainian residence permit (Posvidka), a student card/student certificate (if applicable) and preferably a plane ticket.

Moreover, for the border of Ukraine and Moldova, checkpoints are located in Chernivtsi (Kelmenti, Rosošani, Sokirjani, Mamaliha), Vinnytsia (MohilivPodilsky) and Odesa (Palanka-Mayaki, Starokozače) regions.

Unless they already hold a valid Moldovan visa, Indian nationals must obtain a Moldovan transit visa in advance from the Moldovan Embassy in Kyiv. In order to cross the border, Indian citizens should have a valid passport, valid Ukrainian residence permit (Posvidka), student card/student certificate (if applicable), plane ticket and Moldovan transit visa.

For Ukraine-Poland, checkpoints are located in the regions of Lviv (Rava-Ruska, Shegini, Krakivets, Grushiv), Volyn (Yagodin). Unless they already have a valid Schengen/Polish visa, Indian nationals must obtain a Schengen/Polish visa in advance from the Consulate General of Poland in Lviv. In order to cross the border, Indian citizens should have a valid passport, a valid Ukrainian residence permit (Posvidka), student card/student certificate (if applicable), preferably a plane ticket, Schengen/Polish visa.

The border points of Ukraine and Romania are located in the regions of Transcarpathia (Djakove – only for vehicles, Solotvino) and Chernivtsi (Porubnje). Unless they already have a valid Romanian visa, Indian nationals must obtain a Romanian visa in advance at the Consulate General of Romania in Chernivtsi or Solotvyn.

To cross the border, Indian citizens should have a valid passport, a valid Ukrainian residence permit (Posvidka), student card/student certificate (if applicable), preferably a plane ticket and a Romanian visa.

Moreover, the contact numbers for the Embassies of India, Kiev or Indian Embassies in the above mentioned countries are also shared for any assistance regarding border crossing.

Students began returning to Ukraine earlier this month to save their careers. The new teaching session started from the first week of October. The first group of Assamese students, mostly older medical students, are returning to Ukraine, who are to be involved in practical teaching in hospitals.

The Center had last month told the Supreme Court that medical students who have returned to Ukraine cannot be accommodated in Indian universities in the absence of any provision in the National Medical Commission (NMC) Act, 2019, and giving such a relaxation will seriously compromise the standards of medicine . education in the country.
