Don’t worry about getting your clothes dirty, just play and enjoy! Sagar Batra, a resident of Gurugram, was about to take his seven-year-old son Arav to the Kukduku Art Festival, a two-day event for children, before heading to the arts and crafts section at Airia Mall Grounds in Sector-68. , Gurugram. Within minutes, Arav joins volunteers from The Curious Bees – a Gurugram-based educational initiative – to try his hand at pottery. Spread across a vast area, the Kukduku Art Festival features interactive art-based sessions, painting stalls, storytelling events, snacks counters, etc. for children aged two to 18 years as well as parents. The concept of this fest is to create a place where kids can “learn by doing”.
Talking about putting together this event, Abhishek Roy, co-founder of Kookduku shared, “We wanted to put together a festival where we could instill love and passion for art be it visual art, fine art or performing art – something that is digital. Misses are due to distraction. We added elements of art, storytelling and theater to eliminate overuse of digital tools.”
Nurturing young minds
When we attended the event on the first day, many children were seen walking on the ground with their parents. Some children were seen eating ice cream while others were carefully carrying the activity books and resources they had received in the session. The Kukduku venue is divided into three sections – Manch, Choupal and Nukkad. Many activities are performed simultaneously in these departments.
On Saturday afternoon, scores of children gathered at the choupal to meet Gurugram-based artist and storyteller Alma, who organized a session of music and stories. “Ao bacho tumhe sunaun ek kahani Hindustan ki…(Tell you a story about India),” Alma sang to the gathering. Around the same time, storyteller Simi Srivastava, co-founder of Ghavalashala, organized a storytelling session where he narrated an immersive story to children. Another highlight was ‘cosplay’—where children met superheroes like Captain America, Spiderman, Naruto, etc.

A common complaint made by parents was about weather spoiling play. However, many of them are happy to host such an event in NCR. “In Gurugram, you have many parents of young children. However, you don’t have many activity centers, or museums, etc. So it’s nice that such an event is happening where both parents and kids can participate together,” concludes Gurugram-resident Shruti Modi.
