Hundreds of enthusiastic youths, mostly from Jammu and Kashmir’s Samba district, gathered for the Army Agniever recruitment rally that began here on Friday, officials said.

The rally, organized by the Army Recruiting Service, Jammu, at the Jorawar Stadium in Sunjuwan, will continue till October 22, officials said. “I want to be drafted into the army to serve the nation, even if it’s just for a year,” said the passionate youth, who did not want to be named.

Most of the youth showed up at the venue in the early hours – well before the scheduled start time of the rally. “My brother appeared in a similar rally here in February last year, but his election could not take place due to the cancellation of recruitment after the government announced the Agniver scheme. “I hope that I will be selected and continue my service in the army, instead of leaving the force after four years,” said another young man.

Jammu-based Defense Public Relations Officer (PRO) Lt Col Devender Anand said the rally is being held for young aspirants from 10 districts of Jammu province – Samba, Kathua, Jammu, Udhampur, Rajouri, Poonch, Reasi, Ramban, Doda and Kishtvar.

“Unprecedented response was received from the ambitious youth of Jammu division. The army worked relentlessly together in close collaboration with the civil administration to make this rally a grand success,” he said.

The recruitment rally began after being flagged off by the Zonal Recruiting Officer, Punjab and J&K, in the presence of officials from the Army, Civil Administration, J&K Police and Health Services. He conveyed his best wishes to all the candidates who attended the rally.

The civil administration has extended all possible support to enable smooth and efficient conduct of this rally, Lt Col Anand said, adding that Army Recruitment Office Jammu has advised all candidates to carry all certificates as per the notification.

Candidates should bring photo certificates from the police and the sarpanch with their photographs duly attested on the certificate, and if this is not done, the candidature will be rejected, he said.
